Carmen Mattson, age 83, of Alexandria, died Thursday, March 17, 2016. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Monday, March 21, 2016 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 PM Sunday at the Anderson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at church. OBITUARY Carmen Kathryn Hames was born July 5, 1932 in Buffalo Lake, MN, the daughter of Marion “Pat” and Hattie (Schweikert) Hames. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake. Carmen graduated from Buffalo Lake High School in 1950. She continued her education at St. Cloud State University. In 1952 Carmen joined the United States Air Force. She was stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. during the Korean War. She completed her time in the service at the Human Learning Research Center. Following her discharge she returned to Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota for two years. Carmen continued her education at the McConnell Airline School. She then began employment with Braniff Airways. Carmen’s roommate in St. Cloud introduced her to her youngest uncle, George. On February 20 1959 Carmen was united in marriage to George Mattson at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Colorado Springs for about two years before returning to Minneapolis. They moved to Rochester. The couple was blessed with three children, Mike, Chris and Kathryn. Carmen became a full time mom. She assisted her mother with the Lindberg House, a twenty-one unit rooming house across from St. Mary’s Hospital. On the last day of1970 the family moved to Alexandria, MN. In 1971 they became members of Bethesda Lutheran Church. She served on the education board and taught Sunday School for eight years. Carmen served as president of WELCA for two years. She and George also directed the Christmas program for several years. She worked at the Learning Resource Center at Alexandria Technical College for ten years. Carmen was also a member of the Zetetic Club. On Thursday, March 17, 2016 Carmen died at the age of eighty-three years. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; and a sister, Yvonne Hames. Carmen is survived by her three children, Mike Mattson and wife, Kathy, of Alexandria; Chris Mattson of Garfield and Katie Childers of Alexandria; grandsons, Ryan Mattson, Sean Mattson, Chase Childers and Cole Childers. A memorial service was held Monday, March 21, 2016 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Reverend Jerry Lanes officiated. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Dylan’s Gloves of Love in care of Chris Mattson; the Alexandria Food Shelf or WELCA of Bethesda Lutheran Church.
